Khmer Rouge is the communist party of Kampuchea (CPK). On April 17, 1975, it took control of Cambodia. The Cambodian communist movement was fueled by the Indochina War in the 1950s, which allowed the movement to not only continue, but grow as well. The Vietnamese withdrew from Cambodia in 1972, handing over the major responsibilities over to the CPK.
With the major responsibilities of the war being in the CPK's power, about half a million tons of bombs were dropped on Cambodia. The total number of estimated deaths was about 300,000 people. Many of the fallen victim's families joined the Khmer Rouge revolution due to their frustration with the bombings. Khmer Rouge finally took power in 1975 and forced people into the countryside to obtain agriculteral work. The evacutation resulted in the loss of many lives. All in all, Khmer Rouge eventually failed.
